Though posts are sparse these days, I do take a lot of photos (many can be found on ) but while I can pop the contrast and brightness and make most anything appear #vividdelish, I generally offer little opinion on those short posts. At the same time I don’t have time to go on about each dish I’ve tried here and there. I haven’t even been able to cook much lately, and it’s really bummed me out.
There’s not much travel on my schedule this summer, so I hope to get together with family and friends a lot to share a meal. Cooking out is my preference during this great season, though occasionally we go out. It has to be family friendly and early, or we have to obtain a babysi$$er, as we did on a recent Friday night to join friends at Cooks & Soldiers.
Cooks & Soldiers has had many months to settle in, and I’ve heard numerous positive reports, more-so than their other restaurants of Iberian Pig and Double Zero, which are both fine but uninspiring. God that sounds douchey.
Like I said, not much time, so here’s some brief thoughts on what we had, but overall I was quite pleased. It’s a fun spot. Better executed tapas/pinxtos style dishes than anything around here, and more interesting options. Yeah I heard it’s not as good as your trip to the Basque region or my trip to the Boqueria in Barcelona, but c’mon brah. They feature some nice, affordable wines and cocktails too. Service was excellent too.
pan con tomate – always great
apple, cheese, mango, blackberry
tomato tartare with carrot yolk – a fun experiment
croquetas – crispy but a little bland
bikini – not the greatest version, cut the edges please, it’s a little sloppy. Jose Andres’ version with truffle sets the bar for me
clams – killer
whole fish – fantastic. tender, cooked perfectly and love the crispy garlic and anise flavor
dessert are creative and plated well, though I’m not a sweets person – lemon goat cheesecake
chocolate & corn – can’t say I loved it, but I think that’s just me and it’s an intriguing combo, like chocolate Cap’n Crunch
